Wild Wild West

A day in the Camargue Natural Reserve

At the border between Languedoc and Provence lays a place that everyone cherishes in France. A mix of far west, Provence and Andalusia: the CAMARGUE.

Second largest delta river in Europe it offers a landscape of ponds, rice fields, large beaches, reedbeds and fields, populated with wild horses, bulls, flamingos, an impressive diversity of migratory birds and the very spanish SAINTES-MARIES-DE-LA-MER.

Known for its breathtaking sunsets, its gardians (the local cowboy) riding the local white horse among toro heards, thousands of migratory birds making steps here such as flamingos, and a gastronomy based on local products such as the Camargue rice, it’s a region with a very strong identity.

Pilgrimages legacy

Here the king Saint-Louis founded a port for the crusades in the 13th century, a splendid stronghold that you will discover, AIGUES-MORTES, along with the medieval Carbonnière tower.

At the SCAMANDRE center you’ll even be able to “walk on” the pond, to discover this semi-natural environment unique in Europe.
